Hot Sauce of the Month January 2018

Sweet Heat Gourmet's Moruga Scorpion Hot Sauce: January 2018

hotsauceofthemonthclub.jpgJanuary's SURPRISE ME Hot Sauce of the Month is Sweet Heat Gourmet's Moruga Scorpion Hot Sauce. This sauce is made with Pennsylvania-grown Moruga Scorpion Peppers and does not contain any pepper extract. It's also gluten free, dairy free, and vegan.

Sauce Overview
Sweet Heat Gourmet's Moruga Scorpion Hot Sauce is an extremely flavorful, all-natural sauce hand-made in small batches with fresh produce. The sauce itself is neither too thick nor too thin, but similar in consistency to a slightly chunky tomato sauce. The produce in this bottle is from the Meado View Farm in Kutztown, PA, and purchases of this sauce directly supports this farm. Moruga Scorpions themselves are one of the hottest peppers out there, so you can expect a fair bit of heat with this sauce as long as you haven't completely demolished your tastebuds already with years of eating extracts!

This Moruga Scorpion Hot Sauce is made by Sweet Heat Gourmet, which is based out of State College, Pennsylvania. What makes Sweet Heat Gourmet unique is that they are a small business that uses all local, Pennsylvania produce. They even credit the farms where the ingredients come from right on the bottle, so you know where your sauce was "born." The bottle of Sweet Heat Gourmet's Moruga Scorpion Hot Sauce that you are (hopefully) holding in your hand right now was made by hand, bottled by hand, and labeled by hand. This is the true definition of hand-crafted, small-batch hot sauce.

What It Tastes Like

Sweet Heat Gourmet's Moruga Scorpion Hot Sauce is slightly sweet, but not in a sugary way. You get the semi-sweetness from both the tomato base and from the Moruga Scorpion pepper itself. It also delivers that satisfying, slow-building heat that Scorpion peppers are known for. It's not slap-you-in-the-face hot like you get from a Habanero, but it delivers a nice, all-over mouth burn that builds in intensity, especially as you eat more of it. I like the flavor marriage between the tomato, red bell peppers, and Moruga Scorpion Peppers here because you get the "sweet" fruitiness from the tomato and the Scorpion, but you also get a sense of brightness from the more veggie-tasting red bell peppers.

Tip of the Month
This one would is a great addition to (or even a replacement for) tomato-based sauces that you use in Italian or Mexican cooking. Because the ingredients are so natural and fresh (no preservatives!), it's perfect as a cooking sauce to add heat and flavor to a favorite recipe, such as chili, pasta, meatloaf, steak, veggies, etc.

Thanks again for being a part of the club! See you next month!
